This book is about the conversations that determine both the direction and the quality of our lives. They are the conversations in which we feel strongly and see things differently; when we argue about rights and wrongs; where the stakes are high, people get hurt, and relationships suffer.
The Straight Talk process gives you a way to manage difficult, sensitive and scary conversations so they become stepping stones toward better relationships. It takes practice. You’ll know you’re getting there when you feel your levels of frustration, resentment and anger start to drop, along with your stress levels; and you begin to see your relationships start to improve.
You’ll know you’ve got it right when you realise there is no one in your life driving you crazy for longer than it takes you to plan and hold a conversation.
The book illustrates in dialogue form a range of conversations in families, between friends and at work that you can use as models for your own conversations. Read more...

Straight Talk provides a set of skills that helps you deal with any difficult conversation. Firstly, it helps you to find a solution or a change in behaviour that resolves the problem. Secondly, it does so in a way that helps you build better relationships with people you’re talking to.
If you use straight talk, you will soon be able to talk to almost anyone about almost anything. I say ‘almost’, because this is no magic potion. The first principal of straight talk is that you always choose your battles, and there will be some conversations with certain people that you will forever – quite rightly – choose to sidestep. Nevertheless, the more skilled you become at using the steps explained in the book, the more you will find that there are a few issues that you cannot put on the table safely and discuss constructively.
You will also find that a little straight talk goes a long way. Read more...
