Many managers and their staff dread performance appraisals. The conversations become emotional, people become defensive and conversation becomes argument. Most often the outcome is a damaged relationship and continued poor performance. In the long term, managers who are unable to hold effective performance appraisal discussions find themselves with under-performing teams from which the most competent people have left in search of better personal development.
Managing the performance of staff is one of the most important roles in management and leadership. Success in this role depends on:
- Clear definition and agreement on the performance that is required for success in a job
- Positive feedback when things go well, to reinforce performance
- Critical feedback on poor performance, to put things back on track
- Agreement on steps that will improve performance in the longer term.
Without doubt, the element that has most impact on the effectiveness of the performance management or appraisal process is the quality of communication in the conversations that take place between managers and their people. Typically these conversations are dreaded by managers and employees alike, and do little to impact positively on performance.
The 2 day Straight Talk workshop gives managers skills to handle these conversations effectively, in both formal performance appraisal discussions and in day to day feedback conversations. With Straight Talk skills, performance problems can be resolved without conflict and commitment can be obtained to a change in behaviour.
Workshops are structured around the particular conversations managers in an organization most need to address. For example:
- Fixing a one-off performance problem
- Addressing poor performance that has developed into a pattern
- Making the decision to move into the disciplinary process
- Confronting a poor attitude or toxic behaviour that affects team performance
- Coaching to improve a competency
- Holding people properly to account
- Giving feedback to a colleague or senior person on style, or decision making
- Asking for and accepting feedback on one’s own performance
After the workshop, participants are asked to complete a plan for one of their own conversations and return it to Straight Talk for e-mail feedback. This provides a basis for assessment of skill level and decisions on any need for additional training or coaching.
After training, delegates also receive monthly Straight Talk Tips and in addition, they may be provided with copies of the book, Straight Talk: conversations at work that get results, for future reference.
Workshops are run in-house.
Personal Coaching is an excellent way to reinforce skills learnt in a workshop and to apply them to personal coversations and relationships. Personal coaching is also available on it's own.
