Avoid poor decisions - get other people's input - July 2007
How often have you made decisions only to find out that you were missing critical information? Have you ever made an assumption, in error, because you didn’t have all the facts? How many times have you thought you had commitment to a plan only to be told, much later, that everyone else had reservations?
Poor decisions, incorrect assumptions and action plans that don’t produce action are the inevitable result of conversations in which people don’t speak up and information is not properly shared. The bottom line is that people only speak up when it is safe to do so. So how do you make it safe for others to speak to you?
You don’t have a monopoly on the truth! Don’t operate as a know-it-all, no matter how experienced and skilled you may be. Put effort into being curious. Ask others for their input and listen without interrupting as they give it to you.
Don’t blame! It creates defensiveness. People start to focus on protecting themselves, not on sharing their information.
Don’t second guess the intentions of others! You don’t know what is going on in their heads. Ask “Why?” then listen without judgment to their answers.
The way in which you handle the issues of truth, blame and intention determine how much you get to know about what is going on around you? Don’t you want to know more?
