While the technology with which we communicate is allowing us to do so both more quickly and more widely, our communication is becoming increasingly ineffective.
While the technology with which we communicate is allowing us to do so both more quickly and more widely, our communication is becoming increasingly ineffective.
Good communication is not:
having three mobile phones in your bag and talking on two at once
watching TV while you hold an important conversation with your spouse or partner
typing an SMS at lightning speed when really you should be speaking to the person directly
spilling details of your personal life onto social network sites in the belief that you are developing real friendships.
Today, relationships are played out in stressful environments: demanding clients, stretch objectives, challenging working environments and family pressures. None of these conditions is conducive to calm and thoughtful conversations; the kind that lead to development of good relationships.
The same environments however, present us with complex problems to which solutions can only be found when good relationships are in place, and communication is open, trusting and honest.
Relationships develop conversation by conversation. The better the conversations: the better the relationships. It sounds perverse, but taking time out to slow communication down and allow good relationships time to develop, may well be the best solution to getting things done faster.
