How do others see you? Being approachable is an important component of emotional intelligence and a key leadership competency. How approachable are you? Think how your colleagues and the people who report to you would respond to the items below.

Think how your colleagues and the people who report to you would respond to the items below. Answer “Yes” or “No” to each of the items as you think they would actually respond, not the way you would like them to respond.

You could test the accuracy of your self perception by asking some of them to give you feedback on the same items.

1. Often asks others for ideas and opinions

2. Maintains a generally positive and optimistic attitude even when things are difficult

3. Accepts that he or she makes mistakes and is willing to learn from them

4. Asks others for personal feedback

5. Welcomes questions about “Why” something has to be done
