The more things change; the more they stay the same. By any standards, organisations have changed enormously over the past decades. Under pressure from environmental, financial and technological factors it is likely they will continue to do so.
People have changed too. Generation X and Y recruits are a far cry from the baby boomers of the past. Demanding, smart and irreverent, they have endless questions, ideas to share and an expectation that they will be heard.
So what stays the same? It has always been a requirement of leaders that they inspire others with their vision and energise their organisations toward great achievements. In that, nothing has changed. The principles of engaging with people to unleash their energies remain.
What has changed is that now we really must get the practice right. Co-operative baby boomers made it easy by putting up with an accept-what-I-say-and-do-it- my-way, style. Today’s employees will not be so easily threatened, bullied or intimidated. They will demand excellent leadership. How many of us are up to the challenge?
