Time to get serious - January 2009 |

It will take some effort to get through this year successfully and I have been thinking about what the essentials will be to do so, regardless of your age, position or discipline. I think it comes down to two.
Keep moving
In spite of global warming, political change, economic implosion and just getting back into the traffic, each of us has to find the energy and resilience to tackle our personal challenges and keep moving on. It is a tall order, but this year will reward the persevering. So sleep right, eat right, and take time out. Above all, work on positive thinking and avoid getting sucked into negativity.
Keep on track
With reduced demand, tighter budgets and job cuts, you have to be sure that you are performing at your best, and that you are getting the best from your team. The top performers will survive. That means you must give feedback to keep others on track and get feedback to make sure you are on track. It means immediate feedback to fix mistakes and continuous feedback to ensure you give and get acknowledgement and recognition.
Fortunately, developing resilience and feedback skills are not character traits or personality characteristics. You can learn how to. So go to it!
